Dear fellow Toastmasters and
Friends:
Warm greetings to you!! As we
embark in the new term of Toastmasters, I’d like to take this opportunity to
wish you all happy Toastmastering and a rewarding year to come. With the new Exco team healthily formed,
I want to express my wholehearted THANKS to the team’s enthusiasm and eagerness
to serve. You may have heard or
completed the club survey that have been sent to you, we would share with you
the collective result as soon as we compile the feedback from you. We trust this is the first step to
enhance our club quality for the benefits of members and guests.
Something to share......My wife got
a chance to teach in classes of
Primary 1 and Primary 6 in the same academic term. She told me that when she asked questions
to the Primary 1 pupils, almost all of them raised their hands with naughty
laughing faces and showed hunger of answering the questions, although they may
not know the answers. They’re so
eager to participate, to make mistakes and, as a result, to learn very
quickly. On the other hand, when
my wife asked questions to the Primary 6 pupils, only one or two of them raised
their hand, although most of them know the answers. They’re not keen to participate, afraid of making mistakes
and, as a result, hit a learning plateau.
The above reminds me that the
fastest I learnt was in Primary 1, and then held back as I marched up. It was not until five years ago when I
joined Toastmasters and behaved like a Primary 1 student. I went to a Toastmasters meeting, I
joined the Club, made a lot of
mistakes, learnt a lot, had fun and grew faster than my last 20 years or so.
While Toastmasters club provides
a mutually supportive and positive learning environment for public speaking and
enhancing communication and leadership skills, it’s also a place where we can
foster our self-confidence and personal growth.
As the slogan of our Club says, "Participate,
Perform and Play", may I invite you to wear your Primary 1 hat, (1) come to the
Club meetings; (2) do your best in your role; (3) have fun while learning and
growing.
As our Club is moving towards
our 50th anniversary next year, we have seen a more and more dynamic
group of members in our Club. It’s
so encouraging to see my fellow Toastmasters of high caliber and talents, and
yet so eager to improve for personal excellence. May I take this opportunity to share my motto, "The Largest
Room in the World is the Room for Improvement".
I’m proud of growing together with
you in this Toastmasters journey.
Yours truly,
Kelvin NG
